Nike, the Border Collie

This is Nike (which means Victory). Nike is a tri-color Border Collie. She is also my entrance back into the world of competitive dog sports.

Nike is my heart and my soul, I adore this dog!  She has been so much fun to train.  In 2002 - between Nike's 1st & 2nd birthdays - using 100% positive reinforcement Nike achieved several milestones (6 titles in 4 disciplines).

In (2005) Nike earned 7 titles in 4 disciplines - Rally/Herding/Obedience/Flyball.  This in addition to Nike being awarded a "V" (Versatility Award) from the Border Collie Society - the AKC Border Collie Parent Club.

Nike currently has 25 titles in 6 different sports.

Nike earns 1st HIT May 27, 2006

Nike earns HIGHEST SCORE GIVEN TO DATE in WCFO Bronze Bar Proficiency Test April 28, 2007

Goals for 2007

Nike and I will continue working in Canine Musical Freestyle as our primary sport.  We will be working on our Intermediate Freestyle Routine.  I am debating on holding off HTM routines because it was confusing for "me" to try to do 2 routines well.  Just barely have enough time to train one and was finding that I was constantly sacrificing quality.  We will probably not debut our Intermediate Routine until 2008 as it is too complicated (and I have so little training time) to get it done before that.  We are working on some team routines with friends that we may be able to compete with before that.

2007 Achievements

Rally

Nike and I finally got to enter another APDT Rally trial this time in Omaha, NE a show I went to judge and they were kind enough to work it in so that I could run my own dog!!!! YEAH!  Nike qualified both trials in L2 and finished her Level 2 title with an "Award of Excellence" (received if all your title legs are earned with scores of 190 or above).  Nike's scores in Omaha were 205 and 202 - both were 2nd place - I have never won a run-off in my life - some day I have to teach a dog to heel! (giggle-giggle).  Nike finished her APDT Rally Level 3 title with and "Award of Excellence" the weekend of June 30/July 1st at a trial in Ann Arbor, MI.  She received two 1st place ribbons (scores of 205) and a 2nd place (I think it was 198 but didn't write it down.).  Nike has completed Rally as I am not interested in AKC's RAE titles and there are not enough APDT Trials around to attempt to get her championships, but if we have an opportunity to play in APDT Rally again we will.

Freestyle

Nike earned her WCFO Musical Freestyle Proficiency Bronze Bar at a live competition April 28th in OKC.  The judge said it was the best proficiency test she has ever judged!  We'll gladly take the compliment.  We were 1/10th of a point away from a perfect score.  WCFO announced that currently this is the highest score earned to date for one of their standard tests. The title is W-DD/MF.

2006 Achievements

Freestyle

We entered our first Heel-to-Music routine in the Dec 2005 WCFO Video competition and earned our first leg with a first place and scores of 8.2 Technical Merit and 8.57 Artistic Impression.  While I am very pleased with those scores we have hopefully made a couple minor adjustments and have entered the March Video competition in hopes of the second leg and title.  (May 2006) Nike did qualify - update - Nike received a first place finish to complete her Beginner HTM title.

MOTOWN BOW WOW BOOGIE - Davisburg, MI, May 27-28, 2006.  We introduced 2 new Novice Routines for this our first live event in 4 years.  We performed a HTM (Heel-to-Music) routine to "Do Lord" and a MF (Musical Freestyle) to "Shall We Dance".  Over the weekend we had one 3rd place win and three 1st place wins.  On Saturday our scores for Shall We Dance of 9.5 Technical Merit and 9.7 Artistic Impression gave us wins in High TM & High AI along with High Combined - Freestyle's equivalent of HIT "High in Trial".!!!  Nike now has 2 legs each in MF and HTM and we are looking for the next opportunity to attempt to earn our 3rd leg and titles. For more information about the Motown Bow Wow Boogie visit our Freestyle Page.

SOONER SHUFFLE - Tulsa, OK Sept. 30, 2006.  Nike and I finished both our HTM (W-FDX/HTM) and MF (W-FDX/MF) Novice titles - and we did it with FIRST PLACE finishes.  Nike's Shall We Dance routine earned 8.9 Technical Merit and 8.9 Artistic Impression.  We also won High Combined but as we were the only entry in the HTM division that was pretty much a done deal before we showed up, so we aren't counting that one as a "win" - although the ribbon is pretty.  We also won "Best Collar" which was fun.

I believe I will put the HTM on hold for now.  I would like to do better than what I am doing in that division. It has been too difficult for me to find enough time to train two routines and it is difficult for Nike to figure out what to do when I'm being so sloppy with my signals because of my lack of training time.  So, we'll just have to forgo future High Combined trophies for now.

My goal now is to develop my Intermediate Routine for Musical Freestyle. I have music selected but it needs to be edited (let's just say it has a Mary Poppins flavor) and I have several moves that need to be tighten up and refined as well as a few new moves to train.  We are currently looking at debuting this routine at the WCFO International in Denver, CO end of June 2007.  It will all depend on whether I can develop a routine and train the right moves in time!

Flyball

Nike and I earned our first career (and probably only) "Perfect Start" 0.000 at the Smash Paws NAFA Tournament in KS March 26th.

Rally

Nike finished her AKC Rally Excellent RE title on March 31, 2006.

2005 Achievements

Nike earned her 3rd leg for her UKC CD so she now has "CD" at both ends of her name! Nike earned her AKC "RN" Rally Novice Title March 2005.  NAFA (the flyball sponsoring board) just instituted 2 new titles in-between FDCH and FM which are FDCH-Silver and FDCH-Gold and are awarding those titles retroactively.  So Nike adds 2 more titles to her collection.  Nike had an opportunity to play on a U-Fli "pick-up" team in Henry, IL with "Dogged Forces".  In spite of an injury she was able to earn 390 points for her first U-Fli Title - TF - "Top Flight". Nike earned her PT (a herding title) from AKC - she was handled by my friend Terri Wilson, cause mommy doesn't like being run over by sheep! On September 21st Nike was honored with her VERSATILITY award from the Border Collie Society of America.  Nike completed her AKC "RA" Rally Advanced Title October 2005, she has 2 legs on her AKC Rally Excellent title and we hope to complete it in Dec (provided "mom" doesn't make a mistake and flunk the dog!)

2004 Achievements

At a fun match in KS this September, Nike took a 2nd place in Rally Advanced, - a 1st place in Rally Excellent, - a 1st place in Novice B and HIT (High in Trial/Match).

Nike completed her 3 legs for her AKC CD during the month of October with scores of 195, (2nd pl), 193.5 and 193.5.  I am very proud of my baby girl.  OB is hard - mommy doesn't get to talk to her and Nike see's absolutely no reason to "sit" for one minute when any dog with a brain can tell you it is more comfortable to lay down instead!  Nike received 2 legs towards her UKC CD in Nov. Her scores were 189.5 but mommy lost some of those points on handler errors.  They tell me you have to WAIT for the judge to call the heeling pattern! "I knew that!".  Nike will have to wait until Jan. 05 for the next nearby UKC Obedience Trial to try for that 3rd UKC leg.

Nike was able to attend another UKC agility trial Jan. 24th and has earned her 3rd leg for her AG1 title.  UKC agility is difficult for my speedy little dog, but we're going to go ahead and learn all the "weird" UKC equipment this year so that we can continue to play as my students do well in UKC agility events and I can't have them beating me too much!

On Jan. 10th Nike and I had the opportunity to enter 2 APDT Rally Obedience Trials in OKC.  Nike received 2 legs in Rally 1, one with a score of 191 (that judge had a really tough pencil) and one with a score of 196 (both were 4th place finishes).  Nike received her 3rd Rally L1 leg May 22nd with a score of 197 and a 2nd place finish.  That completes her Rally 1 title and earns her a R1MCL At the same trial Nike earned her first R2 leg with a 2nd place finish and a 195 score.

Nike earned another 416 flyball points in June at the OKC flyball tournament.

2003 Achievements

Nike earned another 591 FLYBALL points at the flyball tournament in Mesquite, TX, March 29-30.  Her team (Muzzle Velocity with North Texas Sharpshooters) set a new club record with a time of 18.87.  June 28-29, Oklahoma City, OK Tournament Nike earned 641 FLYBALL points.  Nike earned 1086 FLYBALL points at the Shoot from the Hip tournament in Mesquite, TX.  Nike earned 387 points at the Las Colinas Tournament and her Flyball Master - FM TITLE. To the best of my knowledge, Nike is the first dog in the state of OK to earn a Flyball Master Title. The next title goal is a FMX - Flyball Master Excellent.  That requires accumulating 10,000 flyball points.  Nike only has 4,833 points to go!

Nike passed the first leg of her HERDING Capability Test on 3-19-03 at Willow Acres Dog Training, in Morrison, OK.  Nike passed the second leg of her HERDING Capability Test on 10-31-03 and now sports a new Herding Capability Tested - HCT TITLE!!!  Our goals for next year are JHD, HT & PT titles.  Herding takes us a little longer than most as Nike is only able to work on livestock 2-3 times A MONTH!  This has made our progress slower than it should have been.

Photographic evidence that Nike can "lie down" in the presence of sheep!!!!

Nike participated in her first AKC RALLY OBEDIENCE competition Saturday, April 26th at Grove, OK.  Nike placed 3rd in the Advanced class, and although didn't place in the Novice class, did receive a very respectable score of 96.  At the Nov. 1st RallyO trial in Tulsa Nike placed 2nd with a score of 96 in Rally Advanced (we didn't enter the novice class.)

We haven't had the opportunity to play AGILITY much in 2003 but we do have a few accomplishments.  Nike has received one OAJ leg with a clean run and a 28.97 time on a 41 second course - 1st Place.  Also this year we wanted to try UKC agility.  Nike ran in 2 trials and received 2 legs toward her AG1 title with scores of 197 & 198.
